Mildew

Crawl Space Encapsulation: Mildew

On a wide variety of substrates, mildew can be found growing. Mold will produce what looks like a thin, black or sometimes white growth on its surface. Fungi, which include molds, are simple plants that are collectively referred to as fungi. Even though molds are always present in the air, the molds that are responsible for mildew growth require water and specific temperatures to thrive. They develop most frequently during the humid summer months, particularly inside closed houses.

What does mildew look like?

Mildew is easily identifiable by its characteristic coloration, which can be gray, white, or a light brown. It grows on the surface of damp areas. It has the appearance of powder and often has a putrid odor to go along with it. Mold can be either black or green in color, and it often has a fuzzy appearance as well as a pungent musty odor.

Why is there mold growing on the walls?

Mold on walls is typically brought on by overly humid conditions combined with a lack of ventilation, but there are times when it can be brought on by plumbing leaks, both inside and outside of the property. Inadequately insulated heating pipes are another potential source of moisture accumulation behind the walls.

Which is the worse problem: mold or mildew?

Mold is unquestionably a more serious problem than mildew. The difference between mold and mildew, is that certain types of toxic molds, in contrast to mildew, can lead to serious health problems for you and your family. In particular, people should avoid being exposed to black mold.

Can mold and mildew be painted over with regular paint?

Mold is a type of fungus that can only grow in environments that are damp enough to support its reproduction. The use of mold-resistant paint is an effective method for preventing the growth of mold. However, once mold has begun to grow, the paint will not kill it. Mold can be covered up with paint, but it will always come back if the problem isn't addressed immediately.

Are mildew stains dangerous to my health?

Any stains that are still there after the mold has been removed are safe to touch, in contrast to the mold itself. However, mold stains are an aesthetic issue, and removing mold stains is important for both improving the appearance of your home and increasing its property value.
